Indicators serve at least two main purposes for organisations, as shown below:

These two purposes should ideally co-exist and be met by one set of integrated indicators, with the appropriate systems to capture the underlying data. Where there are two separate approaches – one for managing the business and one for reporting externally – there are potential problems. One system that supplies both sets of information means that transparency is enhanced and bureaucracy reduced.
