Julian is a pioneer in sustainability in Australia, and has led EcoSTEPS since its inception in 1999. Julian has a science and business background. Having originally studied zoology at Oxford University, England, he then worked internationally as a Chartered Accountant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, where he became National Training & Technical Manager. He has also owned and operated an international retail and marketing group and so understands first hand the challenges of managing a business in a complex and competitive environment.

During 2014-16 Julian took a sabbatical from EcoSTEPS to work as a Director with Ernst Young (EY) Sydney in the Climate Change and Sustainability Services practice. While he enjoyed working with some of the largest organisations in Australia and set up the Australian Supply Chain Sustainability School his sense of purpose and personal values have taken him back to EcoSTEPS. Julian now assists organisations across a wide range of sectors in develop and implement their sustainability strategies.

He is an accredited consultant and trainer with the global sustainability framework, The Natural Step. He is an experienced facilitator and member of IAP2. He is a director and past-president (2014-15) of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) and has been a director of the not-for-profit Futures Foundation and Environs Australia, the local government environment network. Julian has also chaired the Institute of Chartered Accountants' Broad Based Business Reporting Committee. He speaks and writes widely on sustainability issues.
