Indicators serve at least two main purposes for organisations, as shown below:


These two purposes should ideally co-exist and be met by one set of integrated indicators, with the appropriate systems to capture the underlying data. Where there are two separate approaches one for managing the business and one for reporting externally there are potential problems. One system that supplies both sets of information means that transparency is enhanced and bureaucracy reduced.
